The History of Theatrical Costume: The Yuri Yurovsky Collection

This extraordinary collection explores the intersection of costume, fashion, and theater—where art meets performance and history. Each piece in the collection serves as a mirror of its time, capturing how individuals were perceived by their society and era through the expressive lens of costume design.

Spanning original costume and set design sketches from the 1930s to the 1960s, the collection highlights the work of prominent Eurasian theatrical designers. These artists created visually stunning costumes and scenic compositions for legendary institutions such as the Mariinsky Theatre, the Bolshoi Theatre of Opera and Ballet, and the Kiev Opera.

Yuri Yurovsky—a visionary artist, collector, and cultural chronicler—assembled this rare archive over decades. A member of an intellectually rich and artistically vibrant circle, Yurovsky was closely connected to prominent scenographers including Tatiana Bruni, Anatoly Petritsky, and Fedor Nirod. His dedication to preserving their work has resulted in a museum-quality legacy, now accessible to the public.

An Educational Legacy

The collection is more than an artistic achievement; it is a valuable educational resource. Studying the history of fashion and theater within the broader context of world art cultivates creative thinking, refines aesthetic taste, and builds a foundation for stylistic awareness. It offers essential tools for navigating and contributing to the ever-evolving landscape of design and culture.
